Business education began at MacEwan in 1971 with the Business and Administration Division and consisted of two departments, Business Administration and Secretarial Sciences. Offerings were expanded the following year to include diploma programs for Accounting, Law Clerk, and Marketing, along with the Continuing Education Division. In the 2004-2005 academic calendar, Business Division changed to School of Business.

Office of the Vice-President, Resources and People

The Vice-President, Resources and People, oversaw the university's information technology, finance, facilities and space management, human resources, campus services and procurement functions.

Superceded by Vice-President, Finance and Administration & CFO, Sharilee Fossum was appointed VP on January 4, 2021. The Vice-President, Finance and Administration & CFO, is responsible for the financial management and planning of the university along with human resources, facilities management, information technology, and campus services including sports and recreation, our residence and food services.

Faculty of Arts and Science

A Board of Governors organizational chart from 1971 lists Academic Support Departments, which consisted of the Mathematics & Science Department, Humanities Department, and the English Department. The 1984 –1986 academic calendar lists the Academic Services Division, and the 1990 – 1991 calendar notes a name change from Academic Services to the Division of Arts and Science. It is unclear when another name change occurred but the academic calendar from 2006 – 2007 indicates the Faculty of Arts and Science for the first time.

Music Department

Originally part of the Arts Techniques Department, Music is a department of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications. Once a diploma program with 3 majors (composition, performance, and recording arts), it became a degree in 2011, with the option to obtain a diploma after the completion of the first two years. A new major, Recording and Production, was added in 2019, to the existing majors of Composition, Performance, and General.

The department was housed at the Jasper Place Campus, later named Centre for the Arts and Communications Campus, from 1972? until campus closure in 2017, when it moved to Allard Hall on City Centre Campus.

Department of Athletics

Part of Student Affairs, the Department of Athletics has existed at MacEwan since its early days and has encompassed a variety of club sports, recreational activities and interscholastic team sports. In 1974 MacEwan joined the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC). One year later, the Board of Governors approved the adoption of the “Griffin” as the college’s mascot. In 2013 MacEwan University became the 17th member of Canada West Universities Athletics Association as a probationary member, and in 2014 began competing in Canada West in basketball, cross country running, soccer and volleyball.

MacEwan Staff Association

In 1982, non-academic staff requested incorporation under the Societies Act as the “Grant MacEwan Community College Non-Academic Staff Association." NASA was officially recognized on January 20, 1983 by the Board of Governors. The purpose of the association was to represent the interests of support and supervisory staff. The first executive committee consisted of Barry White, President, Len Rust, Vice-President, Ilene Nessel, Treasurer, Madelaine Boston, Secretary, Barb Bech, Director, Peter Jenkins, Director, Sharon Schnell, Director, and Joy Shaw, Director. On June 13, 2001 the name changed to MacEwan Staff Association (MSA), and on July 10, 2006 it became a union when the Alberta Labour Relations Board granted certification as a bargaining agent.

In spring, 2024, the MacEwan Staff Association (MSA) was renamed to MacEwan Staff Union (MSU) after becoming an unincorporated trade union that falls within the parameters of the Alberta Labour Relations Code. A vote was taken May 23, 2024, to inaugurate the name with the first meeting as the MSU starting in spring 2025.

Communication Studies

Communication Arts was one of the first programs offered at Grant MacEwan Community College in 1971. It was part of the Arts Techniques Department along with Fashion Sales Technician, and Library Technician. In 1972, it became part of the Applied Arts Division, and offered three programs: Advertising and Public Relations, Audio Visual Technician, and Journalism.

The proposal for the Bachelor of Applied Communications in Professional Writing was approved by Alberta Learning on December 1, 1999, and offered September 2000. A diploma exit option in Professional Writing was offered in 2002.

The Bachelor of Applied Communications in Professional Writing, the Journalism diploma program, and the Professional Writing diploma program were suspended in favour of the Bachelor of Communication Studies. Alberta Advanced Education and Technology approved suspensions for the terms of July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2015 for the applied degree program, and July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013 for the diploma programs. The suspension for Professional Writing was subsequently extended to June 30, 2014 to allow part-time students to complete the diploma.

The Bachelor of Communication Studies, first offered in the 2011-2012 academic year, included the majors Journalism, and Professional Communication. The Department of Communication consisted of the bachelor degree and a Public Relations diploma.

Information and Privacy Office

The Information and Privacy Office (IPO) ensures compliance with applicable legislation and policy, including Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (“FOIP Act”) and the Electronic Transactions Act (Alberta) for information that is in the custody or control of the institution. The office reports to the Office of General Counsel.

Golf Management program

Golf Management offerings began in the 1992/1993 academic year as part of the Management Studies diploma with the Golf Operations Management major, and a post diploma certificate, Professional Golf Management Certificate of Achievement. In the 1994/1995 calendar, Professional Golf Management was also offered as a major in addition to the certificate of achievement.

In 1998, Alan Riley was offered the role of Program Coordinator for the Professional Golf Management Program and over the next 15 years, was directly responsible for the program curriculum and was instrumental in mentoring and teaching students. In 2006, Alan received a Distinguished Teaching Award from Grant MacEwan, acknowledging his contributions. Alan can also be credited for drafting an application for the Grant MacEwan Golf Team in 2008.

In 2011/2012, the Golf Operations Management major was not offered. In 2014/2015, the Professional Golf Management major was suspended with no planned intakes for the program.

Faculty of Fine Arts & Communications

The Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications has changed and grown since the early days of the college. What started as the Applied Arts Division in the 1970s, became Performing and Visual Arts in the 1980s and then the Centre for the Arts and Communications. Around 2013, The Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications was created and consists of five departments, focusing on fine art and design, theatre production and performance, arts and cultural management, journalism and professional communication, and music.
