        History

        The Centre for Sport and Wellness was part of the Grant MacEwan Community College City Centre campus construction in 1992. It opened in 1993 with a 25 m swimming pool and whirlpool, gymnasium, racketball and squash courts, weight room, and health centre. February 17, 2000, the pool was renamed the Gerry Kelly Aquatics Centre after MacEwan’s second president. In 2017, the gym was renamed the David Atkinson Gymnasium, after the school’s fourth president, David Atkinson.

        Today, the Sport and Wellness Centre contains a fitness centre, fitness studios, gymnasium, aquatics centre, camps, and athletic therapy services. It provides rec leagues, sports clubs and tournaments and events to all students, staff and faculty here at MacEwan University.
